Barktoberfest - Music to an Animal Lover’s Ears
Rob Mock, manager of Melodee Music in Sterling, Virginia, has always been a dog lover, having grown up with dogs his whole life. As a volunteer with Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA), a no-kill animal rescue organization, Rob continually seizes opportunities to combine his musical affiliation with his affection for animals.
Such opportunity arose in May 2003 when Rob decided to conduct a small FOHA adoption event at Melodee Music, comprised of one volunteer bringing one dog and one musician providing entertainment. Unfortunately, rain prevailed and the event was cancelled, at which time the event was postponed to fall 2003. Given several months were now available to plan for this event, aspirations became increasingly large and, what started out as a small, intimate event evolved into Barktoberfest – A Music and Pet Lovers Festival.
The first annual Barktoberfest was conducted in October 2003, at which time three live bands performed on one stage, an estimated 800 people attended, three vendors were present, pets outside of FOHA were not permitted, and approximately $12,000 was raised. Over the years, the event has grown considerably. Specifically, leashed, friendly pets are welcome, resulting in a surge in attendance – that is, approximately 2,000 people and 400 canines attend each year. Moreover, the musical presence has greatly expanded to include nine live bands on three stages offering a diverse range of talent. Approximately 30 vendors participate and the silent auction has expanded to include over 100 items. The pictures below evidence the enjoyment experienced by all Barktoberfest attendees and, to that end, will hopefully inspire new and recurring attendees each year. The growing imaginations and commitment of FOHA volunteers, combined with enhanced marketing and outreach efforts, have provided Rob and his colleagues the opportunity to generate over $25,000 each year, all of which is donated to FOHA. The 100 dogs and 50 cats residing at FOHA are extremely grateful for these funds, thereby providing them nourishment and medical care until they find permanent loving homes.
